Here are smart jr s pictures of me ripping off the second to last stair.
Tearing up carpet on stairs.
3 cut or tear off carpet and put in garbage bag.
4 tear up padding and put in garbage bag.
With a flat head screw driver up against the nail strip strike the end of the screw driver with a hammer until you can get under the nail strip and pull it up you may want to use gloves during this step.
I have plans to install hardwoods in our upstairs hallway.
1 pry up the right corner.
This works fine for now.
2 pull carpet over to the left until reaching the spindles.
If not cut the carpet near the top of the top riser grab the cut end and pull the carpet off the stairs by hand.
I ended up cutting it a little more and folding the carpet under and stapling it down at the edge of the wood that is at the top of the staircase.
My method was this.
The blue stuff is the carpet padding and the arrows show where the nail strips are.
Wear gloves to protect your hands from the staples that hold the carpet in place.
Hopefully that will happen next summer.
Some stairs are covered with short sections of carpet that wrap over just one tread and riser.
